The Neighborhood
MACARTHUR PARK/WESTLAKE* :: IN NUMBERS
In the next forty years, the Hispanic and Asian populations in the U.S. are set to nearly triple. The country will be a little more black, and a lot less white. These national demographic shifts are catalyzed by neighborhoods like MacArthur Park/Westlake which is heavily skewed towards the ethnic groups that are growing the fastest. Please see MacArthur Park Media for more information.
MACARTHUR PARK/WESTLAKE :: ON THE MAP
The MacArthur Park/Westlake District is surrounded by neighborhoods it mainly has nothing to do with: Downtown Los Angeles to the east, Echo Park to the north, the West Adams/University District to the south and Koreatown to the east. Of the four, only Koreatown seems to be moving into MacArthur Park with the kind of boldness that makes it difficult to know where Koreatown ends and MacArthur Park begins.
*To be clear, the neighborhood in question is called “Westlake,” not “MacArthur Park.” We prefer the latter though, only because there seems to be considerable, logistical confusion around the term “Westlake.” When people in the neighborhood say “Westlake,” they mean Westlake Street, one block east of Alvarado. White people seem similarly confused, very often associating “Westlake” with Westlake Village, a suburb in the San Fernando Valley, or (not kidding) The Westside Pavilion, a shopping center. So we’re kind of stuck referring to the neighborhood as “MacArthur Park” and “MacArthur Park/Westlake” and, sometimes, like on the graphs above, as simply “Westlake.” Apologies for any confusion.
